St. Mary’s youth programs offers fun, growth, development, and time together. Young people participate in worship as acolytes, choir singers, and lay readers; attend parish and diocesan activities; perform service to the community – for example, helping cook meals for the BSAFE summer program for inner city youth. In their time together they make friends, come to understand their responsibilities and grow into their places as people of God.
Sunday School for all kindergarteners through fifth graders begins at 9:45AM in the classrooms underneath the main church building. You can bring your children down before the start of the 10AM service.
Our curriculum synthesizes Episcopal tradition, Montessori Education, self-design, faith formation, spiritual exploration, and Godly Play. A team of highly qualified and dedicated teachers offer Sunday School for ages from infant to 8th graders. The schedule of lessons is posted on the Godly Play classroom door. Except for a few weeks during the summer, Sunday School follows the School Year Calendar.
Our three classrooms are divided into multi year age groups:
• Shelby teaches Godly Play to grades 1 – 4 in our Godly Play classroom. Our Godly Play program teaches Bible stories, parables and liturgical actions through story-telling with concrete objects and biblical figures.
•Michael leads Our Time for grades 5 – 8 in the Book Nook.
• Gabby and Stephanie guide the youngest members of our congregation in our Childcare Program for infants through kindergarteners.
(Godly Play is the only class who goes to the Sanctuary for Eucharist; the other two classes do not.)
Visitor and other registration forms, as well as further information, are on the table outside the Godly Play classroom. Please alert us to allergies and specific needs; we want your child(ren) to be safe and have fun! If you have any questions about our program or our curriculum, please email Shelby, our Director of Youth Ministry and Education.
Other Youth Activities
In addition to attending Sunday school, many of our youth are members of the Junior Choir and/or serve at the altar as an acolyte.
